Build GRIT in Learners & Yourself!

I recently came across this 6 minute TedTalks video about building GRIT in our learners. Grit is PASSION and PERSEVERANCE for long term goals. Angela Duckworth goes on to encourage educators the importance of having and building grit.

How can we build GRIT in our kids? Well, we must continually develop their GROWTH mindset. We must teach them that nothing is FIXED, we must teach the energizing feeling that failure is temporary, the power of the word “YET” (we haven't reached that goal..YET.) What if we displayed the word “YET” around our spaces? The constant reminder of their goals (and ours), and the importance of a growth mindset will certainly build that Passion and Perseverance in our learners.

After listening to this TedTalk, I couldn’t help but reflect on the GRIT in my life as an educator. It is important for us all to set those risk-taking, ambitious long-term goals, and to remember living life isn’t a sprint but a marathon.

Being a first year Instructional Coach, my long term goal is to empower and build capacity in all educators to raise student success- I am learning that I will not be able to “sprint” to achieve this. This will take numerous amounts of fails, statements of “yet”, and perseverance to reach this long-term goal.

I encourage you all to reflect on your long-term goals/set some risk-taking ambitious goals. What are you passionate about achieving in your personal life and in the world of education? Are you building GRIT in yourself and your learners?

If not, then you haven’t YET, and can start NOW. And I would LOVE to partner with you on these goals. :)

As always, please continue to book me and seek me out for any guidance you may need.
