Guided Math
Happy Thursday!!
The ICs got trained by Region 10 a few months back on "Guided Math" because it is something the district would like to pilot for this Fall. I dug into Guided Math in Action book by Dr. Nicki Newton, and I decided to offer it as FedEX to anyone that wants to focus on their math block right now.
What is Guided Math?
Guided Math is when you have small group of learners working together (3-5 learners) on a specific skill based on data from the ongoing assessments you are collecting.
Designers are working with learners specifically on a skill or strategy- and documenting what they are doing during that time. It's not groups where these are lows, middle, high groups- the groups are fluid and learners are constantly moving.
It is differentiated- the lesson or activity you are doing with your small group CAN be the same but just adjusting your questioning and the product allows you to meet your learners at their zone of proximal development.
It is documented and reflected- Dr. Newton is very passionate about the documentation and reflection piece of guided math. This is something I always struggled with in the classroom; I tried to brainstorm in my presentation different ways you can document and reflect/share that is efficient for you and your learners.
Feel free to Click here for the presentation I went over yesterday.
If you would like to dig deeper into this- I would LOVE to share this presentation and discuss more about the resource.(I have an extra copy of her book, if you want to borrow) OR If your entire grade or house is interested- - during your "learning" focus of team time- I would love to share it, too!
There will be more to come in the Fall about it, but I just want to share it now in case any of you were interested. Thank you to those that came yesterday!
As always, if there is anything you need please let me know!
